Wapping is an East London district in the borough of Tower Hamlets. The Wapping area covers most of the E1W postcode, along with St Katharine Docks and part of Stepney, Shadwell and Whitechapel.
Built on the site of the former London docks, Wapping has maintained its riverside identity, in spite of 1980s regeneration of the area. Modern houses and flats were built in the area during this decade, and warehouses were repurposed as converted living space. Historic landmarks still point to the area's rich history though, such as the Prospect of Whitby pub, which has overlooked the Thames since 1520, and is the country's oldest riverside pub.
Due to its central location, Wapping is easily accessible from other parts of London. Wapping station is serviced by the London Overground line, with trains to the well-connected Whitechapel station taking just a few minutes.
