Local information about Southwark

The London borough of Southwark, immediately south of the River Thames, sits opposite the City of London. Since the turn of the millenium, the borough has become home to some of London’s most recognisable structures and landmarks.

Popular landmarks within the borough include the Shard, London and Britain’s tallest building, as well as the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe. Southwark is also home to borough market, one of the capital’s longest-serving markets, opened in Victorian times. The market has since been the subject of multiple architectural additions and redesigns, including the resiting of a portico to the market from Floral Hall, Covent Garden.

By the Thames property is in high demand, with a plethora of recent developments on offer. These new-build apartments often offer stunning views but are expensive due to their proximity to the city centre. Further south and deeper in the borough one can find period houses and purpose-built flats too, as well as former social housing now on the private market.

London Bridge, on the periphery of the borough, offers great transport links to the area, from the city and further afield via tube and railway links. Southwark tube station also offers a route into the city, on the Jubilee Line, and overground connections can be made at Peckham.
