Local information about South London
There’s no easy way to summarise South London; although there is a distinctive ‘South London’ identity, the area is diverse and many of the neighbourhoods are steeped in their own history and culture.
The south of London stretches out right into the neighbouring counties of Kent to the East, and Surrey to the west. Many areas in these counties are now enveloped by the M25 and areas like Bromley, that were traditionally some distance from the city, are now considered London boroughs.
Of course, a huge variety of housing is available south of the Thames, from riverside luxury apartments in Southwark to detached mansions on the outskirts of Greater London. Family houses and purpose-built flats are present throughout, and the property market is not as fiercely competitive as many areas north of the river. This - in addition to large green spaces, tree-lined streets and a general spaciousness lacking in North London - makes the South an attractive proposition for many.
The South is not as well-serviced by the underground network as North London, and the lines that do run through go largely north-south, rather than east-west. Nevertheless the area is serviced by many bus routes, and the London Overground network is also prevalent
